22-Year Old Man Sentenced To Death By Hanging For Murder Of Sex Worker In Ogun State

A 22-year-old man, Jamiu Malomo, was on Wednesday, January 22, sentenced to death by hanging by an Ogun State High Court for the murder of a sex worker, Asisat Akande.

Malomo, an ex-convict who had been released from prison just a month before the incident, stabbed Akande to death following an argument over his refusal to pay the agreed fee in full.

The court found Malomo guilty of murder, a crime he committed in 2021 when he was 18 years old. He had initially pleaded not guilty to the charge during the trial.

Justice 0. Ogunfowora, in delivering the judgment, stated that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt. The judge declared:

“You are hereby guilty of killing Asisat Akande as preferred against you. You will be hanged by the neck until you are dead. May God have mercy on you.”

During the trial, State Prosecuting Counsel A.M. Adebayo, who is also the Deputy Director of Public Prosecution, detailed the events leading to the crime. Adebayo revealed that Malomo committed the offence on July 18, 2021, at around 9:30 pm in the Ori-Apata community, Oke-Aregba, Abeokuta.

Malomo reportedly picked Akande from a bar at Panseke for sexual pleasure and took her to his residence. After their encounter, Akande demanded the agreed sum of â‚©10,000, but Malomo insisted he only had â‚©8,000.

The disagreement escalated, prompting Malomo to stab Akande in the neck with a knife, causing her instant death.

The prosecutor also disclosed that Malomo was arrested at the 3AD club in Panseke while attempting to pick up another sex worker.

The crime contravened Sections 316 and 319 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun State, 2006.
