A 25-year-old man, Joseph Abodunrin, has taken his own life in the Dagbolu community of Osogbo Local Government Area, Osun State, citing the rising cost of living and its toll on his mental health.
His cousin, Abodunrin Grace, confirmed his passing on Thursday through her X handle, describing him as a supportive brother who hid his struggles behind smiles.
“I still feel shattered. You encouraged us all, but you went to voice out in a space we couldnât think of. You hid it all from us, went about with fake laughter and smiles. Now we canât get over it,” she wrote.
Joseph had previously shared distressing messages on X, hinting at his struggles. On January 31, he tweeted, âIf not for my siblings, I would not commit suicide. Those younglings are still full of optimism, hope, and dreams that I donât want to squash with the news of my death.â
On March 24, the day he took his life, he quoted the same tweet and wrote, âIâm sorry I failed you guys, I couldnât just do it anymore⊠No matter how I explain it, you wonât understand!!!â
He added, âI hope yâall find it in you to keep fighting, hopeful, never negotiating your dreams, and to finally and eventually thrive. That is my last wish.â
In a previous post on March 9, he questioned why he was still holding on, writing, âI have asked myself several times why I should fight and keep fighting to stay alive, and I have not gotten any meaningful answer ever since.â
Joseph also revealed that he had sought help but felt it only worsened his situation.
Despite sharing the location of his final moments, his body had not been recovered at the time of filing this report, as âDagbolu,â the location he mentioned, was no longer active.
