NYSC states that there’s no order to start paying minimum wage

The management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has addressed false information circulating in the media about the payment of a ₦70,000 minimum wage to corps members.

In a statement by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Eddy Megwa, the NYSC made it clear that no official directive has been issued by the government to increase the corps members’ allowance.

The statement urged corps members, their parents, and the public to disregard any misleading information and reminded them that there are established channels of communication within the NYSC. The organization also warned corps members not to fall for false claims made by those attempting to deceive Nigerians.

In 2020, the NYSC raised the monthly allowance for corps members from ₦19,800 to ₦33,000 after the government signed a new minimum wage bill of ₦30,000. Recently, in late July, President Bola Tinubu signed into law a new minimum wage bill that raised the national minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000, fulfilling a promise he made during his campaign.

“The signing of the minimum wage bill into law by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is both a promise kept and a demonstration of his people-centric governance model,” the statement said, highlighting the President’s commitment to improving the welfare of Nigerian workers.
