President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally nominated Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun for confirmation as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), currently serving in an acting capacity.

In a letter read during Tuesday’s plenary session by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, President Tinubu invoked Section 231(1) of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution, which empowers the President to appoint the CJN based on the National Judicial Commission’s recommendation and subject to Senate confirmation.

“I have the honour to forward the nomination of Honourable Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun CON for confirmation as CJN,” President Tinubu stated. “I hope this request receives expeditious consideration and confirmation from the Senate.”

The Senate President has referred the nomination to the Committee of the Whole for further consideration.
