The African Union has pledged support to the West African community of nations, ECOWAS, on its response to the coup in Niger Republic.
After an extra-ordinary summit in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, on Thursday, ECOWAS instructed its military chiefs to put together an intervention force for possible deployment in Niger but stressed that the key priority was to move forward by peaceful means.
And the African Union has now supported ECOWAS moves, saying that the continued arrest and detention of ousted President Mohammed Bazoum is “unacceptable”.
