Rivers State Local Government Elections Marred by Protests and Controversy

A second protest broke out in Rivers State on Saturday, with youths marching through Port Harcourt’s GRA area to express opposition to the ongoing local government elections.

This follows a pro-election demonstration held just a day earlier.

The protesters, citing a Federal High Court judgment in Abuja, claim the elections are illegitimate and should not proceed. They argue that the police and INEC were instructed not to participate.

“We’re law-abiding citizens, that’s why we’re not participating,” said protester Bobmanuel. “We’re here to tell the world there’s no legitimate local council election in Rivers State.”

Despite the protests, elections are underway in all 23 local government areas, with materials distributed across wards and units. However, reports of delayed arrivals have surfaced.

Election Updates:

– Voting has commenced in Ward 7, Unit 1, Bagha, Khana LGA, with a smooth process reported.

– Delays have been reported in Ward 11, Kono, Khana LGA, and Rumukalabo Units 1-8, Port Harcourt City LGA, with voters waiting.
