Libya Authorities Hold Super Eagles, Officials Hostage at the Al Abag Airport

The Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles, faced an unexpected delay at Al-Abaq Airport on October 13, 2024, when Libyan authorities diverted their chartered plane to a city over two hours away from Benghazi, their scheduled destination.

The incident is reportedly in response to complaints from Libyan players regarding their treatment during their recent visit to Nigeria for a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match, which Nigeria won 1-0 courtesy of Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s goal.

This development adds to the escalating tensions between the two countries, sparked by Libyan fans’ calls for stringent measures against the Super Eagles.
