The Federal Government has unveiled plans to address the nationwide teacher shortage by recruiting 2,000 teachers annually in each state.

The recruitment, which aims to hire 74,000 teachers across 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, is expected to commence by December 2024, as outlined in the Ministry of Education’s roadmap.

This move comes after it was reported that 18 states failed to recruit teachers in the past five years, exacerbating the shortage. The Universal Basic Education Commission has also expressed concerns over the lack of teachers in public schools.

To address this issue, the Ministry of Education plans to:

Recruit 2,000 qualified teachers certified by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) in each state annually

Have the Minister of State for Education meet with state governors to secure their support and cooperation.

This initiative seeks to improve education quality and address the pressing issue of teacher shortage in Nigeria.
