CAF Removes Nigeria-Libya Qualifier from Schedule

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has dropped the second-leg fixture between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Libya’s Mediterranean Knights from the 2025 African Cup of Nations qualifier schedule.

This decision follows a tumultuous series of events, beginning with Nigeria’s 1-0 victory in the first leg at Uyo’s Godswill Akpabio Stadium.

The return leg in Libya was plagued by controversy when Nigerian players and officials endured a 14-hour ordeal at the Libya airport, forcing their return home. Libya’s Football Federation alleged sabotage and threatened legal action against Nigeria, prompting a CAF investigation.

As a result, CAF omitted the Libya vs. Nigeria game from its updated Tuesday schedule. The investigation is ongoing, leaving the second-leg fixture’s status uncertain.

Nigeria’s 1-0 win in the first leg had set the stage for a potentially thrilling return leg, but the controversy surrounding the team’s treatment in Libya has brought proceedings to a halt. The outcome of the investigation will determine the future of the qualifier.
