Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has strongly denounced the recent national power grid collapse, describing it as a “national shame.”

The grid collapsed twice in 24 hours, plunging millions into darkness.

Obi attributed the recurring disaster to leadership failure and poor policy implementation.

He emphasized the critical need for reliable power supply to transform Nigeria’s economy and support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Comparing Nigeria to other African economies, Obi noted that South Africa, Egypt, and Algeria generate significantly more electricity despite having smaller populations. Nigeria, with a larger population, generates less than 10,000 megawatts, with frequent collapses.

Obi called for urgent, comprehensive reform of the power sector, citing Nigeria’s governance deficit as a major obstacle to growth. He questioned how long Nigerians would have to endure a system that fails to provide basic necessities for a productive society.

Obi’s statement sparked diverse reactions, highlighting the need for effective solutions to Nigeria’s persistent power challenges.
