The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced on Tuesday that restoration of the national grid, which partially collapsed on Monday, October 14, 2024, is almost complete.

According to TCN’s Public Affairs General Manager, Ndidi Mbah, the grid disturbance occurred at 6:48 pm on Monday. However, recovery efforts began immediately, with Azura power station providing the necessary support.

By 10:24 am on Tuesday, grid recovery had reached advanced stages, despite a brief setback. Mbah confirmed that bulk power availability has been restored to about 90% of TCN’s substations nationwide, with supply reinstated in Abuja and other major distribution centers.

The Ibom Gas generating station remained operational throughout, supplying power to southern regions, including Eket, Ekim, Uyo, and Itu 132kV transmission substations.

This incident marks the sixth grid collapse this year, following previous occurrences on February 4, March 28, April 15, July 6, and August 5. TCN’s Executive Director, Nafisat Ali, previously cited inadequate gas supply, poor coordination, and generation availability as contributing factors.

An investigation into the cause of the incident will commence once the grid is fully restored.
