Nigerian Government Dispels Concerns Over Yoruba Nation Petition to UK Government

The Nigerian federal government has downplayed concerns surrounding a petition submitted by Yoruba Nation agitator Sunday Igboho to the UK government, seeking separation from Nigeria.

Igboho, on behalf of Prof. Adebanji Akintoye, leader of the Yoruba Nation movement, delivered the petition to 10 Downing Street.

However, the UK government has since clarified that it does not endorse or involve itself with petitions concerning another country’s sovereign affairs.

According to Richard Montgomery, British High Commissioner to Nigeria, the petition’s acceptance was merely a procedural formality, not an endorsement by any UK government agency or committee.

Montgomery emphasized that the UK government typically rejects such petitions, prioritizing bilateral relations with Nigeria.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Montgomery reassured the Nigerian government of the UK’s commitment to maintaining good relations, and that the petition would not affect the countries’ diplomatic ties.

The Nigerian government reaffirmed its commitment to national unity and sovereignty, following the UK government’s clarification.
