Tension in Enugu After Police Shooting of Ogene Musician Igbo Jah

Tension has escalated in Enugu, the capital of Coal City, following the shooting death of renowned Ogene musician Igbo Jah by a police officer from the Anti-Cult Unit of the Enugu State Police Command.

Reports from Daily Post indicate that enraged youths have taken to the streets, igniting bonfires in the Obiagu and Asata neighborhoods in protest.

Sources reveal that Igbo Jah was shot by an Anti-Cult Police operative on Friday night after attending an event at the anti-cult office. Witnesses claim that he was leaving the office when the officer discharged his firearm, striking him.

He was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The Enugu State Police Command confirmed the incident through a statement issued by spokesman DSP Daniel Ndukwe. He stated:

“A male police inspector from the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad has been arrested and detained for the alleged murder of Okezie Chikezie Mba, popularly known as Igbo Jah.”

“The incident took place around 8:10 p.m. on October 25, 2024, at the Tactical Squad’s Headquarters.”

“The musician was reportedly leaving after a friendly visit when, for reasons yet to be determined, the police officer fired his rifle, hitting the victim.”

“He was rushed to the hospital but was confirmed dead by the attending physician. His body has been placed in the mortuary for preservation and an autopsy.”

Ndukwe added that Commissioner of Police Kanayo Uzuegbu has instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Police overseeing the State CID to carry out a thorough investigation. This will ensure prompt and appropriate disciplinary actions against the officer involved.

The Commissioner extended his sympathies to the victim’s family, friends, and associates, calling the incident unacceptable. He assured that the officer and anyone else found responsible would face legal repercussions.

CP Kanayo urged those connected to the victim to remain calm and cooperate with the police to facilitate the pursuit of justice.
