“I Was Birthed after 3 Years” – Former Governor Amosun Shares Extraordinary Birth Story at Mother’s 25th Remembrance

Former Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun shared on Sunday that his late mother reportedly carried him in her womb for three and a half years, describing his birth as miraculous and noting that some found it hard to believe he was human at birth, given the extended period.

Amosun shared this revelation during the 25th remembrance prayer for his mother, Rafatu Sanusi-Amosun, held at the family residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State’s capital. His mother passed away on October 27, 1999.

At the event, Amosun spoke about the importance of honoring parents even after their passing, a value he said is supported by both the Quran and the Bible.

He explained, “Beyond showing respect to our parents after they are gone, the best gift we can offer them is prayer. This 25-year milestone feels significant, so we chose to make the occasion more than usual—not as a celebration, but as a gathering to seek Allah’s forgiveness for her.”

Amosun recounted that his prolonged time in the womb led his father, who was not present for his birth, to make arrangements to cremate him if he did not survive.

His father eventually named him ‘Duro-o-rike,’ meaning ‘Stay and be given the best of care,’ to honor the unusual circumstances. Amosun recalled how his mother’s pregnancy confounded many, with the pregnancy seemingly appearing and disappearing over time.

“When I was finally born, many people were startled and fled, finding it hard to believe I was human. But here I am today,” he added.

Amosun’s elder brother, Abidoye Amosun, supported the account, noting that their father sent traditional gifts and names for the newborn days before the naming ceremony.

Reflecting on life’s fleeting nature, Amosun encouraged prayers for his late mother and all departed loved ones.

The remembrance event was attended by prominent Islamic leaders from Egbaland and beyond, former aides from Amosun’s tenure, and family members.
