Court Grants Reps Member Alex Ikwechegh N500,000 Bail Over Assault on Driver

A Magistrate Court in Kuje, Abuja, has granted bail to Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives, in the sum of N500,000 following allegations of assault against Stephen Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver.

On Wednesday, Ikwechegh was arraigned on a three-count charge bordering on assault and threat to life, filed by the Office of the Inspector-General of Police. The charges read:

1. Assault occasioning harm to Stephen Abuwatseya.

2. Threat to life, contrary to Section 4 (1) of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2015.

3. Assault, contrary to Section 265 of the Penal Code.

During the court session, Ikwechegh pleaded not guilty to the charges. The Magistrate, noting the severity of the allegations, granted bail in the sum of N500,000 with one surety in like sum.

The conditions for bail include:

– The surety must be a resident within the court’s jurisdiction.

– The surety must provide proof of ownership of property.

– Ikwechegh must surrender his international passport.

The case was adjourned for further hearing.

This incident highlights concerns about violence and abuse of power by public officials and the importance of accountability.
