Delta North Senator Ned Nwoko has reiterated his call for the federal government to permit Nigerians to carry firearms for self-defense.

He made this appeal on Channels Television’s Politics Today, citing the country’s pervasive security challenges.

Nwoko argued that allowing citizens to protect themselves would help mitigate these issues.

He shared a personal experience where his Senior Legislative Aide was killed by gunmen who attacked his Abuja home, emphasizing that if his aide had been armed, the outcome might have been different.

“To address security concerns, I propose that Nigerians be allowed to bear arms, with certain conditions,” Nwoko said. “These include:

1. Training at a gun shooting school

2. Mental fitness certification from two medical doctors

3. Endorsement from local government chairman and traditional leader

4. Background check confirmation from Divisional Police Officer”

Nwoko’s proposal aims to empower citizens to defend themselves, sparking debate about the potential benefits and drawbacks of civilian firearm ownership in Nigeria.
