Edo Govt Criticizes Governor-Elect Okpebholo’s N5 Billion Inauguration Spending Amid Political Tensions

The Edo State Government has called on Governor-elect Monday Okpebholo to concentrate on preparations for his lavish N5 billion inauguration ceremony, rather than dragging Governor Godwin Obaseki into political disputes.

Crusoe Osagie, Special Adviser to Governor Obaseki on Media Projects, expressed disappointment in a statement, criticizing the new administration’s emphasis on extravagant spending over immediate governance needs.

“It is concerning to see a return to an era in Edo State where reckless spending and unnecessary celebrations take precedence,” Osagie said. “The decision to exclude the current governor from the inauguration event underscores the pettiness that may define this new administration.”

He added, “The incoming administration has committed N5 billion for the inauguration, with further costs expected on November 12, the event day.”

Osagie remarked that Edo citizens, accustomed to the prudent use of public funds to foster growth, are now witnessing wasteful spending.

He also noted the outgoing administration’s professional handling of the transition process, avoiding the turmoil seen in past transitions.

“We have maintained a respectful approach in the handover process, yet the incoming administration seems frustrated, perhaps expecting an opportunity to exploit or accuse us of mismanagement,” Osagie concluded. “Instead, they are resorting to baseless accusations against Obaseki, attempting to shift blame—an approach that, unfortunately, does not surprise us.”
