Mustapha Sego Inaugurated as Lagos NURTW Chairman

Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle Adio, popularly known as Sego, has officially been inaugurated as the substantive Chairman of the Lagos State Council of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW). Sego had previously served as the Chairman of the Caretaker Committee for the council following the dissolution of its executive committee.

The inauguration, held with much fanfare at the union’s secretariat in Oko Oba, Agege, Lagos, on Thursday, attracted numerous council members from across the state. During the event, an elated Sego urged members to embrace peace, reflecting on the recent challenges faced by the union.

“If you have the wisdom to win a war, you must also have wisdom for peace. We want peace in our state, and may God help me bring peace to this union,” Sego said.

He expressed gratitude to God for his new role and thanked everyone who had supported his journey to the leadership position, including his late parents, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and other prominent figures such as Chief of Staff Rt. Hon Femi Gbajabiamila, Private Secretary Mr. Akeem Muri Okunola, Mr. Seyi Tinubu, and HRM Oba Rilwan Akiolu, the Oba of Lagos.

Sego also extended thanks to other dignitaries, including HRM Oba Saheed Ademola Elegushi of Ikate, HRM Oba Gbolahan Lawal of Oniru, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, his Chief of Staff Tayo Ayinde, Lagos Deputy Governor Babafemi Hamzat, and Speaker of the Lagos Assembly Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa. He acknowledged the support from the Lagos State Council of NURTW members, the Special Adviser on Transport Hon. Sola Giwa, and other leaders.

The National President of the NURTW, Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya, also known as MC Oluomo, shared his gratitude for the event in a speech delivered by the Vice President South East, Chief Anthony Ewa. He highlighted the importance of taking the union to new heights following the recent National Delegates Conference in Osogbo, Osun State.

“I thank Almighty Allah for witnessing this event despite the challenges we faced in recent months. I extend my gratitude to the dignitaries and founding fathers of the union, whose sacrifices laid our foundation. It’s our duty to elevate the union further,” MC Oluomo stated.

The National President urged members to avoid actions that could lead to violence and requested their cooperation to build a stronger union. He also recognized union officers who had completed their two mandatory terms under the union’s constitution.

Representing the Lagos State Ministry of Transport, Engineer Ojoowuro Olasunkanmi conveyed the ministry’s support for the NURTW’s role in advancing the state’s transportation sector. Speaking on behalf of Special Adviser on Transport Hon. Sola Giwa, Olasunkanmi said, “The NURTW is crucial to realizing our transport goals for Lagos State. I congratulate Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle Adio on his election as chairman and urge members to support him for a successful tenure as we work to make Lagos a smart city.”

The event was also attended by the Deputy National President, North Central of NURTW, Alhaji Musa Garba, as well as traditional rulers, union members, and other dignitaries. Additional officers, including the Deputy Chairman, trustees, ex-officio members, and other officials, were also inaugurated.
