The family of the late former Ondo State governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has endorsed Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate Bamidele Akingboye for the upcoming governorship election on Saturday, November 16.

According to Vanguard, the endorsement was announced at a press briefing in Akure, where Akeredolu’s family urged voters to prioritize integrity over party loyalty.

Representing the Akeredolu family, Oluwafemi Akeredolu, stressed the importance of choosing a leader genuinely committed to development. He, the younger brother of the late governor, called for candidates who prioritize the state’s growth and well-being.

“I am the youngest brother of the late Oluwafemi Akeredolu, born of the same parents. Our family has a reputation for truthfulness and decisiveness. Though my brother, known as ‘talk and do,’ was a dedicated APC member, this election is not about party,” he said.

He criticized party loyalty in politics, adding, “Sometimes, parties field candidates unfit for office. It’s time we vote for individuals based on competence, not party allegiance.”

Akeredolu praised Akingboye’s vision for developing Ondo’s untapped resources, particularly the Ondo Seaport, which he described as one of the state’s most valuable assets. He noted that, despite its potential as an economic hub, the port remains underdeveloped.

“Ondo State’s seaport is among the deepest and can accommodate large vessels. My brother secured the port certificate before his passing, yet progress has stalled. Now, there’s talk of handing it over to a foreign entity. We can’t allow that. Ondo State needs change, and that’s why we’re endorsing SDP and Akingboye,” he said.

He assured voters that, if elected, Akingboye would immediately invest his own resources to advance the state, emphasizing, “Akingboye will use his personal funds for the state right from the start. He’s a leader with a vision for the people, not just for himself.”

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who succeeded Akeredolu, is contesting the election as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate.
