Rivers State University Students stage protest after armed robbery at Female Hostel

Students of the Rivers State University have staged a protest over the poor security of the school environment and its environs, after hoodlums invaded a female hostel.

Reports say hoodlums suspected to be armed robbers, on Thursday morning, invaded a female hostel at the Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, carting away with mobile phones, cash and other valuables.

Hostels ā€˜Dā€ and ā€˜Cā€ near the school back gate where many of the female students are accommodated were raided at about 1:45am, and some of the students were reportedly raped.

During today’s protests, the management of the institutionĀ  immediately shut the two entrances of the school to prevent the situation from escalating.

One of the students who spoke with journalists on the telephone said, ā€œAbout four female students were injured. They (hoodlums) were armed with guns and machetes. They operated for about 45 minutes, collected phones, cash and other valuable items belonging to the girls.ā€

The spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the robbery incident, but said no student was raped.
