Former UK Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott has passed away at the age of 86 after battling Alzheimer’s disease. Sir Tony Blair led tributes, describing him as a “committed and loyal” public servant.

Lord Prescott’s family, in announcing his passing, said he had “dedicated his life to improving the lives of others, championing social justice, and protecting the environment.”

The former trade union activist and ex-merchant seaman died “peacefully” in his care home, surrounded by loved ones.

Sir Tony Blair expressed his devastation at the loss, saying: “He was one of the most talented people I encountered in politics, deeply committed, fiercely loyal, and undeniably unique.”

He added, “John will hold a special place in the history of Labour leadership. He will be mourned by friends and admirers across the globe. For me, this is a day of profound sadness but also great pride in having known and worked with him—a remarkable man and an exceptional servant of his country and party.”
