The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly opposed the idea of Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, being positioned as the next governor of Lagos State. This comes in response to recent endorsements by various groups suggesting Seyi Tinubu as a potential successor to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in 2027.

One such endorsement came from the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders, which, during a meeting in Owerri, Imo State, suggested Seyi Tinubu could also run for governorship in Osun or Imo states, where his family reportedly has roots. Similarly, a socio-political group, Friends of Seyi Tinubu, praised him as a visionary leader with intellect and empathy, further fueling speculation about his political ambitions.

However, these endorsements have sparked backlash. Lagos PDP spokesperson Hakeem Amode dismissed the idea, declaring, “Lagos will not serve him.” Amode criticized the notion of political office being treated as an inheritance and warned against any attempts to impose Seyi Tinubu on Lagosians, citing past resistance to such tactics in other states. He emphasized that many Lagosians did not support Bola Tinubu during the last presidential election, indicating they would also reject his son.

The Coalition of Lagos Indigenous Youths also voiced their disapproval, insisting that non-indigenes should not be allowed to govern Lagos State.

In contrast, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos dismissed discussions about the 2027 elections as premature. APC spokesperson Seye Oladejo urged citizens to focus on supporting the current administration instead of speculating about future candidates.

Prominent APC chieftain Joe Igbokwe also criticized the push for Seyi Tinubu’s governorship, describing it as a distraction aimed at undermining President Tinubu. “Ruling Lagos is not a job for amateurs,” he remarked in a Facebook post.

The debate has underscored tensions within Lagos politics and the potential challenges for any candidate linked to the Tinubu family.
