Army Chief Seeks Increased Budget to Address Accommodation, Security Challenges

The Acting Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has called for an increased budgetary allocation for the Nigerian Army to effectively carry out its constitutional responsibilities and address the issue of inadequate accommodation for soldiers.

Oluyede made this plea during a condolence visit by the Senate Committee on Army, led by Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua, on Monday in Abuja.

Highlighting the challenges faced by the Army, Oluyede noted that approximately 15,000 personnel are recruited annually, but there is insufficient housing to accommodate them.

He stated, “Nigeria belongs to all of us, and without your support, it would be very difficult for us to secure the nation. I appeal to you, as prominent members of the National Assembly, to support us in making our tasks easier so that we can help secure Nigeria to the best of our ability.”

The Army Chief expressed concern over dwindling resources allocated to the Nigerian Army and urged the legislature to prioritize key issues in the next budget.

“Over the years, the resources allocated to the Army have steadily declined. For instance, despite recruiting about 15,000 personnel annually, no support has been provided for their accommodation. This raises serious concerns about where these personnel will retire after their service. It is a matter that gives me sleepless nights,” he said.

Oluyede also emphasized the importance of investing in modern combat enablers, particularly technological advancements, to enhance the Army’s efficiency in addressing security challenges. “I appeal to the National Assembly to address these critical issues and support us in ensuring the security of Nigeria,” he concluded.
