Gospel Star Sinach Sued for ₦5 Billion Over “Way Maker” Copyright Dispute

International gospel artist Sinach has been hit with a ₦5 billion lawsuit by music producer Michael Oluwole, popularly known as Maye, over alleged copyright infringement related to her globally acclaimed song Way Maker.

The lawsuit, filed under case number FHC/L/CS/402/2024, accuses Sinach of failing to acknowledge Maye’s contributions to the song’s production and seeks significant damages. Maye, through his legal team at Creative Legal, claims to have co-authored the track, contributing to its recording, mixing, and instrumental arrangements, and is demanding a share of the song’s earnings.

Sinach, represented by Etiaba Chambers, denies the allegations, asserting sole authorship and maintaining that Maye was compensated solely for his studio services.

The case, scheduled for its first hearing on November 27, 2024, could have a significant impact on copyright laws within Nigeria’s music industry. Way Maker, released in 2015, has achieved global success, being translated into over 50 languages and covered by renowned artists worldwide.
