EFCC Launches Investigation into NNPP Campaign Funds, Targets Rabiu Kwankwaso Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reportedly launched an investigation into the campaign funds of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). This move follows the recent arrest of Ifeanyi Okowa, former Delta State governor and vice presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general elections, over alleged mismanagement of campaign funds.

The investigation is believed to be focused on NNPP’s presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, with sources suggesting that the probe is aimed at weakening his political influence ahead of the 2027 elections.

An unnamed source disclosed to Daily Nigerian that the EFCC has been instructed to open a case against Kwankwaso, potentially summoning him to answer questions about the alleged mismanagement of the 2023 campaign funds, with claims originating from disgruntled former NNPP members who have since been expelled.

Earlier in June, a Kano State High Court ruling, issued by Justice Yusuf Ubale Mohammed, had restrained the EFCC from taking action against Kwankwaso regarding the allegations. However, there are suggestions that the EFCC may disregard this court order under alleged pressure from higher authorities.

The renewed scrutiny follows recent comments by Kwankwaso, which were seen as critical of President Tinubu’s influence in the North. Speaking at a ceremony in Kano, Kwankwaso remarked on perceived attempts to dominate the region, highlighting the political tensions between Lagos and Kano.

Additionally, the growing political influence of Kwankwaso was evident during his daughter’s recent wedding in Kano, where a significant number of opposition leaders attended, staying in the city for extended meetings and discussions with the NNPP leader.
