The 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has reportedly detained investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo, according to the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ).

FIJ made the disclosure on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday morning, stating that the detention began three days ago.

“The 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt has been detaining our founder, Fisayo Soyombo, for three days now. Journalism is not a crime,” the post read. The Nigerian Army has yet to respond to the allegations.

Fisayo Soyombo is widely recognized for his investigative reporting on corruption, abuse of power, and human rights violations.

In November, Soyombo released a series of videos supporting allegations of smuggling activities involving officers of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS). According to a statement shared on his social media platforms, he accused customs officials of collaborating with a smuggler to illegally bring in about 2,000 cars and several bags of rice. He claimed the operation was planned for Sunday, November 10, 2024.
