Orji Kalu, the lawmaker representing Abia North Senatorial District, has accused Simon Ekpa, the self-proclaimed leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), of threatening him for not supporting the Biafra cause. Kalu made this statement during an interview with Arise Television on Monday, where he revealed that he ignored the threats from Ekpa.

Kalu emphasized his commitment to security, stating that he would go to any lengths to protect the lives and property of his constituents. He also urged security agencies to be more proactive in combating crime, stressing that security is built on intelligence.

“Simon Ekpa was calling and threatening me because I don’t support Biafra, but I left him to his conscience,” Kalu said. He further added, “You must be a strong leader to condemn crime, and I eradicated crime. No governor should tolerate any type of crime in his state; it is not allowed.”

Kalu also called on the governors of the South-East to take a firm stance against the activities of non-state actors, advising them to be resolute in addressing such threats.

In related news, Simon Ekpa was arrested by the police in Finland on November 21 and was later sent to prison by the district court of Päijät-Häme for spreading terrorist propaganda on social media. The Finnish court has scheduled May 2025 for the prosecution to file charges against him.
