The Kwara State Government has taken disciplinary action against a schoolteacher accused of assaulting a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member at Government Day Junior Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin.

In a joint statement issued on Wednesday by the Commissioner of Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo-Kawu, and the Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Teaching Service Commission, Mallam Tauheed Abubakar, the government announced that the teacher had been demoted by two grade levels and transferred to another school.

The incident occurred when a female corps member visited the school on Thursday to collect her clearance letter. She was reportedly assaulted by the teacher, who allegedly beat and stripped her for not greeting properly.

The investigative panel set up to examine the case found Hajia Hamzat Fatimoh Nike guilty of multiple infractions, including fighting on duty, using foul language, insubordination, and disrespecting the NYSC uniform, which symbolizes national identity.

In addition to her demotion and transfer, the teacher is required to undergo counseling sessions.

The government, through a statement by Bola Onile, Press Secretary of the Kwara State Teaching Service Commission, condemned the teacher’s actions, emphasizing that they violate public service rules and are not representative of the values of the state. The state government expressed regret over the incident and assured the NYSC management that measures have been put in place to prevent a recurrence.
