The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has initiated a thorough investigation into a case of aggression against an officer on the Lekki-Epe Expressway, Lagos, on November 7, 2024. The Corps also expressed concern over the rising incidents of assault on its personnel during lawful duties.

In a statement issued on Monday by the Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, directed the immediate prosecution of the perpetrator and emphasized the need for public cooperation in resolving grievances lawfully.

The incident, recorded near Oko-Ado within the Lekki Unit Command General Operations Area, involved a Toyota Corolla with registration number EPE690HH. The vehicle was stopped for a seatbelt violation, and further checks revealed expired vehicle papers since December 2022, prompting its impoundment. While the driver complied, a female passenger reportedly became aggressive, verbally assaulting the officers and creating a scene before resorting to physical assault.

Efforts to de-escalate the situation led to the intervention of the Divisional Police Officer of Ajah Police Station, who deployed a team to arrest both the passenger and the driver for further investigation.

The Corps Marshal condemned the assault and urged the public to use appropriate legal channels to address grievances, warning against any form of violence towards FRSC personnel. He reiterated the Corps’ commitment to ensuring justice and protecting its officers.

Commending the professionalism and restraint exhibited by the Unit Commander, Chief Route Commander AM Usman, and his team, Mohammed described their conduct as exemplary and reflective of the Corps’ ideals. He assured that the case would be handled decisively to deter similar incidents in the future.
