Health workers across all Lagos State-owned facilities, including the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), general hospitals, and primary health centres (PHCs), have commenced a three-day warning strike today, Wednesday.

The strike was declared by unions including the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Nigeria Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP), Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), and the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU). The industrial action is in protest against the state government’s failure to implement adjustments to the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS).

Oloruntoba Odumosu, Secretary of NANNM, confirmed the strike, stating that it followed the expiration of an ultimatum issued to the government. He added that a December 9 meeting between union leaders and government officials ended in a deadlock.

“The government officials couldn’t provide a clear timeline for the implementation of our demands, and there is no governor’s approval for the payment,” Odumosu said.

He explained that union members unanimously voted to proceed with the strike after being briefed on the outcome of the meeting.
