Troops of the 1 Brigade, Nigerian Army, have captured a notorious bandit leader and arms dealer, Bako Wurgi, also known as Baka NaGarba, suspected to be behind the murder of the Emir of Gobir, Isa Mohammad Bawa, in Sokoto State.
Counterterrorism expert Zagazola Makama shared on his X handle that the operation leading to Wurgi’s arrest took place on Saturday in Shinkafi, Zamfara State. Intelligence reports revealed Wurgi was receiving treatment at a hospital for injuries sustained during a clash with a rival group.
Troops apprehended Wurgi at the hospital, where he was found with multiple cuts and gunshot wounds. While two accomplices escaped, another individual who assisted in transporting Wurgi was arrested.
The Emir of Gobir was abducted on July 9, 2024, in Sabon Birnin, Sokoto State, and murdered on August 22 after ransom negotiations, including cash and motorcycles, collapsed.
Reports indicate that Wurgi played a key role in the abduction and killing. He is also linked to notorious bandit leader Bello Turji through familial ties and is known for smuggling arms with international connections.
Makama noted that Wurgi’s arrest marks a significant milestone in efforts to combat terrorism and banditry in the Northwest region. The suspect is currently being held at an undisclosed location, while a manhunt for his accomplices continues.
