Prophetess Naomi Silekunola Collapses After Ibadan Funfair Tragedy

Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, the ex-queen of the Ooni of Ife, reportedly collapsed on Friday after the tragic stampede at a funfair in Ibadan that claimed the lives of 35 children and left six others injured.

The stampede occurred as over 7,500 children attempted to access a venue originally planned for 5,000 participants. The event was organized by Silekunola and Ibadan-based broadcaster Oriyomi Hamzat.

Following her arrest by the police, Silekunola collapsed and was immediately rushed to the Police Hospital in Eleyele, where she is said to be responding to treatment. Hamzat, who was also hospitalized, accompanied her.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage, prompting the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to take over the investigation. Eight arrests have been made in connection with the tragedy.

In response, the Oyo State Government has introduced stricter safety regulations for public events, while Governor Seyi Makinde canceled his December 25 birthday celebrations to honor the victims, describing the incident as preventable and deeply painful.
