South Africa-based goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has announced the passing of his mother, sharing the heartbreaking news on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday.

“RIP Mom, worst year of my life already,” Nwabali posted on New Year’s Day, accompanied by tear and heartbreak emojis. He added, “A very, very crazy world indeed,” before confirming the loss.

This tragedy comes less than two months after Nwabali lost his father. His father’s death was announced in November, just hours after he featured in the Super Eagles’ 1-1 draw against Benin Republic in their penultimate 2025 AFCON qualifier.

While Nwabali did not disclose the cause of his mother’s death, the news comes as a significant blow, especially after he had shared an optimistic 2024 recap video earlier that day.

“2024 was a good year, we’re doubling everything in 2025. Thank you Chippa United FC. Thank you Super Eagles. Thanks to all my fans. Let’s do more!” he wrote.

The back-to-back losses mark a devastating period for the goalkeeper.
