Speed Darlington Sues IGP For N300 Million Over Alleged Unlawful Detention

Nigerian rapper Darlington Achakpo, popularly known as Speed Darlington, has filed a N300 million fundamental rights enforcement suit against the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, over his alleged unlawful detention.

The lawsuit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1832/2024, was reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). It lists the IGP as the sole respondent and seeks four orders, including a declaration that Darlington’s arrest and detention violated his fundamental rights as guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution.

Darlington, 39, was detained in Lagos over allegations of defamation and cyberstalking related to his comments about Burna Boy.

In the suit, his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, requested an order directing the IGP to release Darlington immediately and unconditionally or produce him in court to allow judicial inquiry into the circumstances of his detention.

The rapper also demands N300 million in general, exemplary, and aggravated damages for what he describes as unlawful detention and claims he was subjected to torture and mistreatment during his time in custody.
