Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has granted pardons to 40 inmates as part of his administration’s justice reform efforts and commitment to reintegrating convicts into society.

Dr. Olukayode Ajulo (SAN), Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, announced that the gesture reflects the governor’s dedication to mercy and rehabilitation. Fifteen inmates will be released immediately, effective Sunday, January 12, 2025, following recommendations by the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.

In a statement titled “Aiyedatiwa Pardons 40 Prisoners to Celebrate 60th Birthday”, Chief Press Secretary Ebenezer Adeniyan revealed that some death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment, while others had their sentences reduced significantly.

Dr. Ajulo explained that the decisions considered factors such as the offences, inmates’ age, health, behavior, and time served. He described the act as a reflection of Governor Aiyedatiwa’s commitment to justice sector reforms and his dedication to extending grace to deserving convicts.

The governor chose to forgo birthday celebrations in honor of the late Secretary to the State Government, Tayo Oluwatuyi (Tukana), who recently passed away.

The pardons were granted under Section 212 (1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution, which empowers state governors to exercise the prerogative of mercy. Recommendations were informed by correctional authorities, legal experts, and community leaders to ensure fairness and compassion in the process.
