Trump Slams Washington Bishop, Calls For Apology After National Prayer Service Remarks

President Trump labeled a Washington bishop “nasty” and called for an apology after she criticized him from the pulpit, accusing him of sowing fear among immigrants and LGBTQ individuals.

“The so-called Bishop who spoke at the National Prayer Service on Tuesday morning was a Radical Left hardline Trump hater,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. “She brought her church into the World of politics in a very ungracious way. She was nasty in tone, and not compelling or smart.”

The remarks followed Trump’s attendance at the service at the Washington National Cathedral, led by Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington.

On Monday, after being sworn in for a second term, Trump implemented measures to suspend the arrival of asylum seekers, expel undocumented migrants, and decree the recognition of only two sexes—male and female.

During the service, Budde addressed Trump directly: “I ask you to have mercy, Mr. President.” Trump, seated in the front pew next to his wife Melania, appeared unsmiling.

When asked about the remarks, Trump said, “I didn’t think it was a good service.”

In his Truth Social post, Trump further criticized Budde without naming her: “Apart from her inappropriate statements, the service was a very boring and uninspiring one. She is not very good at her job! She and her church owe the public an apology!”
