“I’m Still Speaker of The Lagos State House of Assembly” – Obasa Insists On Legitimacy, Denies Allegations, Accuses Police Of Bias

Impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has dismissed corruption allegations against him as “fictitious and unsubstantiated.”

Speaking at a welcome rally at his residence in GRA, Ikeja, on Saturday, Obasa insisted he was unafraid of impeachment but criticized the process as lacking due diligence.

The former speaker alleged that his removal was orchestrated in his absence and accused the Lagos State Commissioner of Police of facilitating the process. He claimed security agents, led by the commissioner, stormed the assembly complex and his residences in Agege and Ikeja, detaining his family with over 200 officers present.

Obasa refuted allegations of financial mismanagement, mocking reports that a gate construction project cost ₦16 billion, saying, “Is it the wall of Jericho?”

“I am not afraid of being removed,” Obasa stated. “It is not my father’s chieftaincy title. I represent my people, who have re-elected me six times. If you want to act, do it properly.”

He cited past cases of impeachment, including those of former speaker Jokotola Pelumi and ex-deputy speaker Adefunmilayo Tejuosho, emphasizing that police involvement was not required during their removals.

Obasa urged for proof of allegations against him and stressed the need for integrity in legislative matters. He expressed gratitude to the Governance Advisory Council and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, describing the governor as a supportive ally.

Obasa was impeached on January 13 by over two-thirds of the 40-member assembly, citing alleged misconduct and other offences. His deputy, Mojisola Meranda, was elected as the new speaker, making history as the first female to lead the legislative body in Lagos State.
