MTN Increases Data Plan Prices, Removes Long-Term Subscriptions

MTN Nigeria has recently increased the prices of its data plans. In January 2025, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved a 50% hike in telecom tariffs, affecting calls, SMS, and data services. This decision came after over a decade of lobbying by telecom operators to adjust prices in line with economic realities.

Following this approval, MTN Nigeria adjusted its data plan offerings. Notably, the weekly 15GB data plan, which previously cost ₦2,000, has been increased to ₦6,000, leading to significant public outrage.

Additionally, MTN has removed its long-term data plans, including 3-month, 6-month, and 12-month subscriptions, from its offerings. These plans were popular among heavy internet users and businesses due to their discounted rates. The removal has left customers with only daily, weekly, and monthly plans, which may not provide the same value.

These changes reflect the broader industry trend of adjusting tariffs to cope with rising operational costs and economic challenges.
