Ademola Lookman has responded to harsh criticism from Atalanta head coach Gian Piero Gasperini after missing a crucial penalty in their 3-1 Champions League loss to Club Brugge.

The Nigerian forward, who had pulled a goal back for Atalanta before his missed spot-kick, expressed his disappointment in a statement, saying he felt “deeply disrespected” by Gasperini’s comments.

“It saddens me on a day like this to have to write this statement, especially considering what we have achieved together as a team and as a city.

Being singled out in this manner not only hurts but feels deeply disrespectful, particularly given the immense hard work and commitment I put in every day to bring success to this club and to the incredible fans of Bergamo.

Throughout my time here, I have faced many difficult moments—most of which I have never spoken about because, in my view, the team must always come first. That makes last night’s events even more painful.

Like our incredible fans, we as a team are hurting after last night’s result. During the match, the designated penalty taker instructed me to take the kick, and in that moment, I took responsibility to help the team.

Life is about challenges and turning pain into power, and I will continue to do just that.”

Lookman’s statement came after Gasperini publicly called him “one of the worst penalty takers I have ever seen” and questioned why he took the spot-kick instead of other teammates.

Despite the setback, Lookman remains determined to move forward, focusing on overcoming challenges as Atalanta shifts its attention to the Serie A campaign.
