Gasperini Set to Leave Atalanta as Rift With Lookman Remains Unresolved

Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini has informed the Serie A club that he will not renew his contract when it expires in June 2026, according to Soccernet.

Gasperini has been at the center of controversy following his post-match remarks after Atalanta’s Champions League elimination against Club Brugge.

After losing the first leg 2-1 in Belgium, La Dea conceded three first-half goals at home, effectively sealing their exit from the competition. Ademola Lookman managed to pull one back but later missed a penalty.

Following the defeat, Gasperini sparked outrage by calling Lookman “the worst penalty taker” he had ever seen. The Nigerian forward later defended himself on social media, explaining that the designated taker had entrusted him with the spot-kick.

The club has reportedly held multiple meetings in an attempt to reconcile the two, but the relationship remains strained.

Gasperini, who has been in charge since 2016, is now set to leave either this summer via mutual termination or when his contract expires next year.

Lookman is also expected to depart at the end of the season as tensions within the squad continue to mount.
