Rivers Governor Fubara Invites Lawmakers Amid Political Tensions

Recent developments in Rivers State indicate that Governor Siminalayi Fubara has initiated peace efforts amid political tensions.

On March 7, 2025, the Governor invited members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to a meeting to discuss several issues, including the provision of a suitable space for Assembly sittings, payment of outstanding remunerations, and the presentation of the state budget.

This invitation follows a Supreme Court judgment that recognized a faction within the state’s political landscape, potentially exposing Governor Fubara to impeachment proceedings. In a related development, the Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Justice Adolphus Enebeli (retired), has challenged the Assembly’s authority to summon him and his commissioners over the annulment of the October 2024 local government elections.

Contrary to some reports, the Rivers State Judiciary has clarified that Chief Judge Simeon Amadi is not planning to embark on a one-year leave, dismissing such claims as false and baseless.

These events underscore the current political dynamics in Rivers State, with various stakeholders navigating the complexities arising from recent judicial decisions and legislative actions.
