Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), has raised concerns about the mental health struggles of Nigerians living abroad. She revealed that NiDCOM has received numerous reports from Nigerians overseas expressing regret and battling depression.

The issue is linked to the “Japa” trend, a term describing the mass emigration of Nigerians seeking better opportunities. However, many migrants face harsh realities, leading to disappointment and mental health challenges.

Dabiri-Erewa urged Nigerians planning to relocate to research thoroughly and prepare for life abroad. She emphasized the importance of understanding local laws, cultures, and societal expectations to avoid unforeseen difficulties.

She also called for better pre-departure counseling and mental health support for Nigerians moving overseas.
