An Abuja Chief Magistrate Court in Wuse Zone 6 has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of social media activist Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), for failing to appear in court on Wednesday, March 13, 2025.

The arrest order stems from a criminal defamation case filed by gospel singer Mercy Chinwo, who accused VDM of making defamatory statements about her on social media. Chinwo has also filed a ₦1.1 billion lawsuit against him, alleging that he falsely claimed she was involved in a contractual dispute and the diversion of $345,000 linked to her former record label boss, Ezekiel Onyedikachukwu, also known as Eezee Tee.

Chinwo’s legal team has presented documentary evidence, including emails and payment receipts, to refute VDM’s claims. Despite a court summons dated March 5, 2025, ordering him to appear in person, VDM failed to attend the proceedings. In response, Magistrate Emmanuel Iyana directed law enforcement agencies to arrest him and ensure his appearance in court.

The court also dismissed a plea from VDM’s counsel, Deji Adeyanju, who requested more time to present his client voluntarily. Chinwo’s lawyers argue that VDM’s actions have severely damaged her reputation, professional standing, and emotional well-being. They are demanding the removal of the defamatory posts, a public apology, and ₦1.1 billion in damages.

This case highlights the legal consequences of making unverified statements online and the growing importance of accountability in the digital space.
