During the coroner’s inquest into the death of singer Mohbad, the nurse who administered injections on him before his passing gave a detailed account of what transpired on September 11, 2023.
She explained that she had been in Cotonou when Mohbad’s friend, Spending, first called, asking her to treat someone with a cut. She was unable to respond immediately but later received another call from DJ Bami, who urged her to come the next day.
“When I arrived at the house around 2:30 p.m., I met a guy carrying Liam (Mohbad’s son) in the sitting room. DJ Bami then led me upstairs. In the room where Mohbad was, I saw water on the floor, which DJ Bami mopped. We then moved Mohbad to another room. At that point, only the four of us were upstairs—me, Mohbad, DJ Bami, and Wunmi.”
She stated that Mohbad asked about the injections she was about to give him.
“I told him I was administering tetanus, paracetamol, and antibiotics. I first gave him the tetanus and paracetamol injections. After I gave the paracetamol injection, Wunmi mentioned that he had an ulcer.”
However, after the third injection, Mohbad began to react.
“He started saying he wanted to throw up. DJ Bami and Wunmi helped him to the bathroom, where he vomited. After that, he sat on the floor, feeling weak, and goosebumps appeared on his body. Wunmi told me that this was how he usually reacted to injections, and I told her she should have informed me earlier.”
Realizing his condition was worsening, she and DJ Bami rushed out to get an antidote.
“We went to a pharmacy, but they didn’t have what we needed, so we went to another. While searching, we got a call from the house saying Mohbad was convulsing. I told them to rush him to the hospital immediately.”
Upon returning, she saw that Mohbad was being carried out.
“They carried him like a baby and placed him in a neighbor’s car. Wunmi and I sat in the front while some guys I didn’t know were in the back with him. But we got stuck in terrible traffic, so we had to transfer him to a bike. I was begging drivers to give us space so the bike could move faster. A guy accompanied him on the bike while DJ Bami and I followed closely behind.”
At the hospital, the doctor questioned the injections she administered.
“He asked if I gave him diclofenac, and I said no. I told him the injections I gave, and he then told us that Mohbad had passed away. They issued a death certificate and gave it to DJ Bami.”
She also noted that she never saw Adura (another associate) at the house.
“It was only when we got to the hospital that Adura came to meet us.”
After visiting a second hospital, where doctors also confirmed Mohbad’s death, they took his body back home.
“When we returned, they locked the door and restricted people from entering. A huge crowd had already gathered outside. Throughout my time in the house, from when I arrived until I left, I never saw Baba Mohbad.”
