Nigeria’s passport landed in 91st place on the 2025 Henley Passport Index, sharing the spot with Ethiopia and Myanmar. Both countries have been dealing with attacks from armed groups.

The Henley Passport Index is updated monthly using data from the International Air Transport Authority.

In Africa, Nigeria ranked higher than only a few nations: the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Sudan, Eritrea, Libya, and Somalia. This makes it the continent’s seventh least powerful passport, dropping from the sixth least powerful in 2024.

The ranking came as Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar claimed the government had improved Nigeria’s image abroad.

“The next stage is to exalt and glorify Nigeria’s image,” Tuggar said during a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday. He added that the ministry had helped secure the release of Nigerians wrongly jailed in some countries.

He did not elaborate on how the government planned to enhance the country’s global standing but said Nigeria was working with other nations while following ethical guidelines in its foreign policy.

Singapore remained the world’s most powerful passport, granting access to 193 countries, while Afghanistan stayed at the bottom with access to only 25 nations.
