Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has been officially sworn in as Namibia’s first female president, marking a historic moment for the nation. The inauguration ceremony coincided with Namibia’s 35th independence anniversary and was attended by African dignitaries, including former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

At 72 years old, Nandi-Ndaitwah brings decades of political experience, having been a key member of the South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO), the ruling party since Namibia’s independence in 1990. She has previously served in significant roles, including deputy prime minister and minister of international relations and cooperation.

In her inaugural address, President Nandi-Ndaitwah pledged to uphold Namibia’s constitution, promote good governance, and drive economic and social development. She also emphasized the importance of regional cooperation, addressing climate change, and advocating for the rights of people in Palestine and Western Sahara.

A notable moment during the ceremony was the introduction of her husband, a retired general, who was given the title “First Gentleman,” symbolizing a shift in traditional gender roles. Additionally, Namibia recently elected its first female parliamentary speaker, further advancing gender representation in the country’s leadership.

Nandi-Ndaitwah’s presidency marks a significant step forward for Namibia, reinforcing its commitment to inclusivity, progress, and leadership diversity.
