Air Algérie is set to begin direct flights between Algiers and Abuja on April 6, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the strengthening of diplomatic and economic relations between Nigeria and Algeria.

This follows the approval of a Foreign Carrier Operating Permit (FCOP) by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), granting Air Algérie the right to operate flights between Algeria, Nigeria, and Douala, Cameroon.

This new route is the result of ongoing efforts to enhance air travel between the two countries, which have been solidified through discussions on renewing the Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA).

In February 2025, Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, met with Algeria’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Hocine Mezoued, to finalize the expansion of the agreement. As part of this, Air Algérie will now include Abuja in its flight network, alongside the existing Algiers-Lagos route.

The introduction of direct flights between Algiers and Abuja is expected to boost regional connectivity, facilitate trade, and enhance tourism.

The service will be operated with a Boeing 737 aircraft, ensuring a smooth and comfortable travel experience for passengers. Both governments anticipate that the new route will not only promote economic collaboration but also increase people-to-people exchanges between Nigeria and Algeria.
