Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy has been removed from office – the first time ever that a US House Speaker has lost a no-confidence vote.Â
Speaker McCarthy was impeached after some of his party members asked for a vote to vacate the Chair, with the final vote tally at 216-210.
Florida Republican Matt Gaetz, filed a rarely used procedural tool known as a motion to vacate the Chair to oust McCarthy. He accused the Speaker of making a secret deal with the White House to continue funding for Ukraine, amid negotiations to avert a partial government shutdown at the weekend.
At a private meeting of Republican politicians on Tuesday evening after losing his job, McCarthy told colleagues he did not plan to run for Speaker again.
He later took aim at his political nemesis, Matt Gaetz, accusing him of attention-seeking.
There is however no clear successor to oversee the House Republican majority, although North Carolina Republican Patrick McHenry, has emerged as interim Speaker.
