Pope Francis has passed away at the age of 88. The Vatican confirmed that he died peacefully at his residence in Casa Santa Marta, Vatican City, on Easter Monday.

Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, made the announcement on Monday morning. He said the Pope died at 7:35 AM, just a day after attending Easter Mass.

In his words, “The Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. He lived his life serving God and the Church. He showed us how to love, serve, and care for the poor and forgotten. We thank God for his life and pray for his soul.”

Pope Francis had been recovering from a long stay at the hospital. He was discharged on March 25, 2025, after 38 days of treatment for bronchitis that later became pneumonia.

He had struggled with lung problems since his early 20s when part of his lung was removed due to infection. In recent years, he had several health issues, including flu and lung inflammation, which led to the cancellation of some trips.

In April 2024, Pope Francis approved a new version of the funeral rite for popes. This updated version will be used for his own burial. He had asked for a simple ceremony, focusing more on his role as a servant of Christ than as a global leader.

Archbishop Diego Ravelli confirmed this, saying the Pope wanted the funeral to reflect faith and humility, not worldly power.

Pope Francis will be remembered for his love, kindness, and dedication to making the Church more caring and closer to the people.
