In a decisive move aimed at improving road safety and reducing accidents involving fuel tankers, the Federal Government has announced an official ban on night driving for all petroleum transport vehicles across the country. The Federal Government through its Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority has said fuel tankers will no longer be allowed to move at night.

According to the directive, fuel tankers will no longer be permitted to operate between the hours of 7:00 PM and 6:00 AM. This decision follows a series of devastating accidents caused by tanker crashes during nighttime operations, leading to loss of lives, environmental hazards, and destruction of public infrastructure.

A spokesperson for the Federal Ministry of Transportation emphasized that the regulation aligns with ongoing efforts to enforce stricter safety measures within the petroleum distribution sector. “This ban is a proactive step toward ensuring safer roads for all. We urge petroleum transport companies to comply fully with this directive as we implement measures to prevent tragedies related to tanker accidents,” the spokesperson stated.

To facilitate smooth implementation, the government will collaborate with relevant agencies, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), transport unions, and petroleum marketers to ensure compliance with the new restrictions. Additionally, officials will conduct regular patrols and establish monitoring checkpoints along major highways.
